Your first transfer: why the first payment can take longer, and what to do

Most transfers with Kangaroo Service follow the same four steps: request a quote, confirm it, pay, and we send the money on. The step that catches first-time senders out is not on our side. It is the moment your own bank sees a payment going to a new payee for the first time.

This post explains what happens, why it happens, and the one habit that makes your first transfer as smooth as your tenth.

How you pay for a transfer

When you sign up, you get your own payment account with our payment partner. Every transfer is paid by a normal bank transfer from your Australian bank into that account. When the funds arrive, you get an automatic confirmation, and the money is applied to whatever transfer you have in progress. If nothing is in progress, it simply sits as your balance until you use it.

Once you know this, the first-transfer delay makes sense.

Why the first payment can take longer

Australian banks treat a payment to a brand-new payee differently from a payment to someone you have paid before. Depending on your bank, a first payment to a new account may:

  • be held for a period before it is released,
  • trigger a text or an in-app prompt asking you to confirm it, or
  • be capped at a lower daily limit than you are used to.

None of this is a problem with your transfer. It is your bank’s own fraud check, and it applies to any new payee, not only to us. It usually happens once. From your second transfer onward the payee is already known to your bank, and the payment lands the way you expect.

What to do: pay first, then confirm

The order most people assume is: get a quote, confirm it, then pay. For your first transfer we suggest the reverse.

  1. Send the funds first. Transfer the amount you want to send into your payment account and let your bank do whatever checks it needs to do.
  2. Wait for the confirmation. You will receive an automatic message when the money has arrived. The funds sit as your balance.
  3. Then request and accept your quote. Your rate is locked for 3 hours from the moment you accept it. Because your funds are already with us, the transfer is settled straight away from your balance, well inside that window.

This way the 3-hour rate lock is never racing your bank.

What if you confirmed first and the money is late?

If you accept a quote and your funds have not arrived within 3 hours, that transfer is cancelled. You do not lose anything. When your bank releases the payment, the money arrives in your payment account and is held as your balance. You then request a fresh quote at the current rate and send from balance.

The only real cost is time, and possibly a slightly different rate on the new quote. Paying first avoids both.

After the first time

Once your bank knows the payee, payments generally arrive quickly and we process your transfer as soon as the funds are settled.
