Should I send CNY or USD to China?

Whether to send in CNY or USD is best decided by your beneficiary, not by you. Our bank account payouts to China are strictly for B2B (business-to-business) transfers, which typically means dealing with a Chinese supplier. And the supplier will tell you which currency they want to receive based on their own bank's preference and reporting requirements.

A few practical differences between the two currencies:

• Fees: there is no difference in what you pay us, regardless of which currency you choose.
• Speed: USD payouts usually take 3-5 working days to settle, while CNY payouts usually arrive in 1-3 working days.

If your supplier hasn't told you which currency to use, ask them. Getting it wrong can mean the funds are returned or held for clarification.

Is there an annual limit on how much my recipient in China can receive?

Your recipient's bank or SAFE (the State Administration of Foreign Exchange) may apply annual conversion limits on incoming foreign-currency transfers, depending on the recipient's account type and personal circumstances. We recommend your recipient check directly with their bank or with SAFE for the specific limits that apply to them.

The recipient's bank is the authoritative source on what they can ultimately receive and convert in a calendar year, so it's best for your recipient to confirm their own position directly with their bank or with SAFE.

For taxation implications on either side of the transfer, we suggest you consult your accountant or tax adviser.

Why does a transfer to China take 1-3 days when other corridors arrive the same day?

China is a special corridor for us. Our current payout provider for China is domiciled in Hong Kong, which adds an extra clearing leg compared to corridors where we have a domestic payout partner. As a result, transfers to China typically take:

• 1-3 working days for CNY bank payouts
• 3-5 working days for USD bank payouts
• 1 working day for Alipay / WeChat Pay (CNY)

We are actively working to find a new payout partner that can provide a faster, more direct service for transfers to China. We'll update this answer when that's in place.
